Working and living in the region
Shenyang is the capital city of Liaoning province. Together with its surrounding towns, Shenyang is an important economic city and the transport and trade centre of north-eastern China. Its name means "the town in the north of the Shen River". This ancient city has a rich history of over 2,000 years, with its founding dating back to the Warring States period (476-221 BC). It was the birthplace of the Qing dynasty (1644-1911) and its numerous cultural relics bear witness to the rise and fall of the last feudal dynasty in Chinese history. The most famous monument of this period is the Shenyang Imperial Palace, which is of great historical and cultural value, and is no less well preserved than the Forbidden City in Beijing. Other notable buildings of the Qing dynasty include the Fuling and Zhaoling tombs.
The Shenyang city has a temperate continental climate influenced by the monsoon. The monsoon sends warm, wet summers, while the Siberian high pressure brings dry, cold winters. The four seasons are distinct here. As a national historical and cultural city, Shenyang is one of the top tourist destinations in China. Famous attractions include the Qipanshan International Scenic Tourism Development Zone, the Shenyang Expo Park, the Shenyang Northeast Asia Ski Resort, and Zhongshan Square.
In Shenyang you can also enjoy a wide variety of traditional snacks such as dumplings, Li Liangui bacon pancakes, Ma Jia siu mai and Xita daleng mian.
