Particularly worth seeing—and both UNESCO World Heritage Sites—are the colonial architecture in the historic center of Santiago de Querétaro, and the five Baroque Franciscan Missions in the Sierra Gorda. Also protected by UNESCO, as part of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, are the places of memory and living traditions of the Otomí-Chichimecas people from Tolimán. A stretch of the Camino Real de Tierra Adentro in San Juan del Río is another of the area’s UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Among the most well-known mystical, traditional festivals in Querétaro are the Fiestas de la Cruz de los Milagros (Festivities of the Cross of Miracles). These take place over three days between September 13th and 15th. The highpoint of the celebration is when the Concheros ascend the Cerro de Sangremal to the Temple of the Cross where – according to legend – the apostle James, patron of the city, miraculously appeared. This night is called the Vigil, when the Concheros perform their forefathers’ dance in shifts for more than 10 hours. On September 15th they conclude their dance and begin their penance, which ends with the Mass of the Holy Cross.

Just 59 km from the town of Querétaro you will find the impressive monolith of Peña de Bernal, which is approximately 300 metres high. This monolith, lying in the middle of the Sierra Gorda de Querétaro, is the third largest in the world, after the Rock of Gibraltar in Spain and Sugarloaf Mountain in Brazil. On March 21st, the spring equinox, the “Monolito” becomes a place of pilgrimage for thousands of tourists looking to recharge their energy levels in the midst of nature. This event is accompanied by a huge festival with concerts and rituals from the pre-Spanish era.
